Growing up in the industrial North of England, I always knew that I wanted to be an artist. Drawing and painting have long been a way for me to relate to and understand the world around me. After studying painting in Cardiff, South Wales, I moved to the United States where I started painting and designing for theater and film, eventually settling in Los Angeles where I live with my wife, two daughters and a small, peculiar dog named Jasper.
I still draw and paint every day both in my studio and as a visual consultant for the film and entertainment industries. I am excited to be able to exhibit my studio work directly via my website and share my creative vision with you and the wider world.
ABOUT MY WORK
As an artist I have always been acutely sensitive to my environment and physical space. My work is a personal response to and exploration of the forms, spaces, light and color that surround me every day. This was true growing up in the suburbs of the industrial north of England, and now in my adopted home of Los Angeles. Like many artists before me I am captivated by the vibrant light of Southern California, and also fascinated by the complexity of its urban landscape; its patterns, colors and repetitions. The daily juxtapositions of the banal, the crazy and the extraordinary that are found in Los Angeles are a constant source of inspiration for my artwork.
The exploration of relationships is fundamental to my art. The dialogue of Color, form, line and repetition are the elements of language that I use. Like characters in a play these elements can be quarrelsome or agreeable, in conflict or harmony, boastfully push forward or shyly recede. Whatever their condition, the drama is always to be found in their relationship to each other. For me the real Joy and challenge of abstract art is that these relationships become open ended. They ask questions, not answer them, leaving the viewer free to share ownership and create their own internal narrative or experience.
