In these Pill shaped paintings I made a color wheel from a defined palette and when I needed inspiration I spun the wheel to pick the next color. It is surprising how often the same colors and combinations occurred from a seemingly random selection process. In this piece the color wheel insisted on this canary yellow and cerulean blue and I went with it. Dispensing with the traditional rectangular format makes it harder to see the painting as a picture “of something” and therefore easier to see it as “the thing itself”. It is no longer a window to the world and opens up the possibility that it could be a window to other things. I love the way that this piece has a conversation going on between a cool 1970s color vibe and the Tibetan Mandala like gradient which compels my eye towards the center. I often find that what I am working on tends to take on a meaning for me in a subtle way, almost in a process of osmosis. These pieces that I painted during the Covid 19 lockdown have come to symbolise the pain of that time, but also the hope of a new beginning. Like many people, I was unable to see family and loved ones. My family is almost all in the UK and I missed so many important events. I was unable to be there for my fathers final days in a nursing home with dementia and for the births of a nephew and twin nieces. I felt a tremendous sense of loss and also guilt at not being able to be there for Dad in his final days. Making work in my studio was an escape from the oppression of the lock down and "A Turn Around the Sun" became a meditation about the circularity of life. This simple composition of quarter arcs at one corner, merging with a square at the other, repeats itself as it morphs from a cerulean blue to a cool. almost lemon yellow. The effect is serene and hypnotic. As the viewer holds their gaze the eye is deceived as the layers start to blend into one another. The colors reminded me of the District and Circle underground line in London. This was the the “tube” that I took every day as I commuted into London for work . It was originally inspired by a simple Kate Spade shopping bag that my wife Sarojini brought home after a shopping trip. She has a habit of keeping bags to recycle so I saw it every day in the closet and over time began to really fall hard for the gorgeous, intense colors. Eventually I took the bag down to the studio and used it as inspiration for some paintings. I tinkered with this piece for an extended period before I eventually put it away and moved on. I recently dug it out for a fresh look and decided that I actually love it as it is. Sometimes things just need a little time and space. While this piece was incubating, I received the sad news that Kate Spade had passed away. I decided to pay homage to her for being a champion of color. One of the things that I am exploring in the Phase-ology paintings is my fascination with music and its commonalities with visual art. I have always been a frustrated guitarist and I started thinking how a guitar string of a certain length when plucked, creates a certain wavelength and note. When that length is halved the wavelength is halved and the note is an octave higher. Certain lengths of a string, or notes are considered to be harmonious, ie. a scale and some dissonant. Visually, some colors and proportions are considered to be harmonious, some dissonant also. In this series I had a lot of geeky fun pushing the limits of that idea, exploring ideas of harmony, rhythm and proportion that are common to both art forms. I developed the transition from color to color using a sine wave that diminished in wavelength proportionally as it moved to the center. One of the things that I am exploring in the Phase-ology paintings is my fascination with music and its commonalities with visual art. I have always been a frustrated guitarist and I started thinking how a guitar string of a certain length when plucked, creates a certain wavelength and note. Sometimes it is so fierce it burns in minutes, sometimes it is so bright it is blinding, and others gentle and breathtaking. I get color palette inspiration from them or perhaps just a mood inspiration.
